St. Paul, Minn., October 4, 2021 – The comprehensive, science-based environmental review process for Twin Metals Minnesota’s proposed underground copper, nickel, cobalt and platinum group metals mining project has been underway since the company submitted its mine plan in late 2019. That regulatory process requires years of detailed review of Twin Metals’ operational plans and potential impacts under multiple federal, tribal and state government entities, in addition to several opportunities for public comment.

Minnesota’s stringent environmental standards are designed to rigorously protect our environment, which includes all of our watersheds. The state’s nonferrous mining rules, which were developed over the course of three decades of comprehensive studies and public review, were upheld recently by the Minnesota Court of Appeals in 2019.

Twin Metals cares deeply about protecting the surrounding environment through development, operation and closure of our mine, because we are a company made up of individuals who live, work and raise families in Minnesota. The minerals we propose to mine are needed for clean energy technologies—electric vehicle batteries, solar panels, wind farms—that are essential to combat climate change. That is why we are advancing a model mine using best available technologies to protect the environment and our workers.

The underground Twin Metals mine will have minimal surface impact, and utilize dry stack tailings management, which is lauded by environmental groups and endorsed by more than 140 NGOs as the gold standard for tailings management in the mining industry. Twin Metals will also utilize an electric mining fleet, which greatly reduces project emissions while significantly improving worker safety. And we are continuously investing in additional project innovations to reduce our impacts, with a long-term goal to become a carbon neutral operation.
