ST. PAUL, Minn., April 14, 2021 – Twin Metals Minnesota is thrilled to welcome Julie Lucas to its team as Director of Water Resources. As a lifelong Minnesota resident with a background in environmental management in the taconite industry, Lucas brings both a deep appreciation for Minnesota’s natural resources and a wealth of knowledge to the Twin Metals team.

Julie Lucas, Director of Water Resources

As Director of Water Resources, Lucas will serve on Twin Metals’ technical team. She will oversee all water programs, including modeling and monitoring work; management of the project water balance; and development of water management structures and systems. Lucas will be based out of Twin Metals’ Ely offices.

“I am looking forward to being a part of the team that determines how to best manage and protect Minnesota’s most critical natural resource – water – as we develop a safe underground operation for developing these strategic minerals,” Lucas said.

Prior to joining the Twin Metals team, Lucas worked most recently at Hibbing Taconite Company as the Environmental Manager, which allowed her to gain an understanding of the application of environmental regulations within an operational mining facility. In addition, she previously served as a project manager/water resources consultant for an environmental consulting firm and as an adjunct biology and chemistry instructor at Mesabi Range Community and Technical College.

“In Minnesota, we have incredible undeveloped geological resources right under our feet,” Lucas said. “At the same time, we know how crucial it is to balance the responsible development of these resources with environmental stewardship. Twin Metals’ commitment to sourcing these minerals in the most responsible way is one of several reasons I am excited to join the team.”

While originally from the Barnum area, Lucas currently lives with her husband Matt in Side Lake, which is located west of Ely. Outside of work, Lucas serves on the Board of Directors for both the United Way of Northeast Minnesota and the Minnesota Discovery Center. She is also an ACE-certified group fitness instructor and health coach and enjoys hiking, snowshoeing and kayaking around the Iron Range.
